Mr. Cornwall’s Creative Colours

Welcome to Mr. Cornwall’s Creative Colours!  Created for the master and amateur alike.  These are 100% pure, finely ground pigments, refined from the natural metal oxides and minerals of the earth.  Our pigments are of the finest quality, are fully oxidized and completely stable, meaning they will not fade over time.  They offer excellent UV protection, sunscreen for the wood!

We chose a pure powdered pigment system to provide the best quality materials to our customers to ultimately use as tools in the Odie’s system of all-natural finishing to create decorative, durable, water-repellent stains, custom-made patinas and colour-matched protective finishes for all projects: wood, metal, masonry and more including flooring, decking, interior/exterior furniture and artwork, doors, gates, panels, railing, siding etc, The list goes on!  DO NOT use glycol ether based dyes or pigments such as Mixol as they will interfere and inhibit with Odie’s unique, proprietary natural curing process.

Staying true to the Odie’s System, there is no one way of doing things!  You are never stuck in a box when using any Odie’s product.  This system is designed to give you all the tools you need and put you in full control!  Make as little or as much stain as needed to complete a project, minimizing waste.  Add more or less pigment to control saturation of colour, and even mix in other Creative Colour pigments to customize the colour, value and tone.  Utilize the different bases for the stain (oils, wood butter and even the wax!) to really tune in your colours and effects to stand out from the crowd!

Getting Started: Making a Basic Stain

There are two basic ways of blending a stain:

(1) Oil based stain with Super Duper Oil,  Odie’s Oil,  or  Odie’s SPO

The Super Duper Oil and Odie’s Oil are typically the preferred finishes for blending a stain, with the Super Duper oil being great for beginners.  The SPO can be used as well but make sure to follow the general SPO applications instructions found HERE

How to Apply:

Choose the desired pigment and mix/stir in very well into the selected oil making sure the pigment is thoroughly dispersed.  You can also combine two or more pigments together to create infinite colour possibilities.  For an outline of the different types of stains you can create CLICK HERE.  For Transparent, Semi-Transparent & Semi-Solid Stains the typical application is with a non-woven pad (rated higher than your last sanding or non abrasive) a stain brush or roller.  Work the stain into the surface making sure to evenly saturate with colour.  Once applied, let set for 10 minutes to no longer than one hour.  Buff off completely using a quality terry cotton towel until dry to touch.  For a Full Bodied Solid/Opaque Stain, the typical application is done using a roller or stain brush.  Roll or brush the stain onto the surface making sure an even, consistent application is achieved.  If needed, you may immediately back roll or back brush the surface to ensure a consistent build, evening out any excess.  No buffing off is required, just let dry completely.  That’s it!  If an additional application of finish is desired, please allow 1-5 days of dry time.  Variables such as drying conditions, humidity levels, pigment choice, products and application techniques used, wood species or medium type, along with desired effects, are all to be considered.

How to Apply:

Mix 1 part Odie’s Oil or Super Duper Oil with up to 2 parts Odie’s Safer Solvent. Add desired pigment and mix/shake well. The pigments may settle so be sure to keep the solution mixed well throughout the staining process. Apply with a non-woven pad (rated equal to or higher than your last sanding) in small circular motions, working the stain into the surface. Once buffed in, let set for 10 minutes to no longer than one hour. Buff off completely using a quality terry cotton towel until dry to touch. If an additional application of finish is desired, please allow 1-5 days of dry time. Variables such as drying conditions, humidity levels, products used, wood species or medium type, along with desired effects, are all to be considered.

(2) Making a Patinating Wax:

How to Apply:

Fold and mash the desired pigment/pigments thoroughly into the Odie's Wood Butter or Odie’s Wax on a paint pallet or clean smooth surface.  A very small amount of Odie’s Safer Solvent may be used to soften the wax/butter if desired.  Work a thin application into surface using a non-woven pad (rated higher than your last sanding) or putty knife/spreader.  Let set up for approximately 1 hour and buff off all excess using a quality terry cotton towel until dry to touch.

Hints and Tips

Always run some samples and test product on a spare surface or inconspicuous area for verification of colour before applying to the finished project!

For cleanup and if any thinning is needed use Odie’s Safer Solvent

Final notes

  • Wood is a natural material. Each species and each piece may finish differently.
  • Surface preparation is of utmost importance for a beautiful finish, be thorough and diligent!
  • Color is subjective, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Getting Started: Making a Basic Stain

There are three basic ways of blending a stain:

(1) Oil based stain with Odie’s Oil, Super Duper Oil, or Solvent Free Super Penetrating Oil.

How to Apply:

Choose the desired pigment and mix/stir it in very well with the selected oil.

(2) Solvent Based Version:

(3) Making a Patinating Wax:

How to Apply:

Fold and mash the desired pigment into the Odie's Wood Butter or Odie’s Wax on a paint pallet. A small amount of solvent may be used to soften the wax/butter if desired. Work a thin coat into surface using a non-woven pad (rated equal to or higher than your last sanding) let set up for approximately 1 hour and buff off all excess.

Hints and tips

  • Start with a small amount of pigment, you can always add more pigment to deepen the color.
  • Blend different pigments together to create custom colors.
  • Water pop for a deeper impregnation of color
  • Coarser sanding equals more color saturation (higher grits will yield less color saturation)
  • For accurate repeatable stains, measure pigment and oil by weight.

Important

Always run some samples and test product on a spare surface or inconspicuous area for color before applying to the finished project!
