ODIE’S EXPLAINED

Odie’s Universal Oil
Uses and Surface Compatibility

All exotic and domestic woods. Interior and exterior projects. Protection beyond wood.

Odie’s Universal Oil—also known as Original or Regular Odie’s Oil—is a proprietary, high-performance penetrating hardwax oil finish. Originally created for hardwood floors, it protects and enhances wood and a wide range of other materials.

What kinds of wood can I finish with Odie’s Universal Oil?

Odie’s Universal Oil works on all exotic and domestic woods, including solid wood, veneer and oily species.

Walnut, white oak, maple, cherry, pine and dense exotic hardwoods are examples—not a complete list. Its compatibility extends beyond the species named here.

What projects and surfaces can I use it on?

Odie’s Universal Oil is suitable for professional installations and home projects, indoors and outdoors.

These examples illustrate its versatility; they are not an exhaustive list of compatible materials or uses.

Material or Application Examples
All exotic and domestic woods Solid wood, veneer and oily exotic species
Interior wood projects Hardwood floors, furniture, tables, cabinets, countertops and cutting boards
Exterior wood projects Doors, gates, decks, siding, fences and outdoor furniture
Other flooring materials Concrete, terrazzo, bamboo and cork
Other compatible materials Stone, metal, leather, epoxy, rubber, plastic and vinyl

Can I use Odie’s on walnut tables, white oak floors or maple countertops?

Yes. Odie’s Universal Oil is suitable for all three—and for projects made from other exotic and domestic woods. These familiar combinations are examples, not restrictions on which woods or projects it can finish.

Is it suitable for cutting boards and butcher blocks?

Yes. Odie’s Universal Oil is a food-safe finish suitable for cutting boards, butcher blocks, wooden countertops, bowls and utensils.

Apply sparingly, buff off all excess and follow the application and curing instructions before putting the finished item into use.

Can I use Odie’s Universal Oil outdoors?

Yes. Odie’s Universal Oil is suitable for interior and exterior applications. Exterior doors, gates, decks and outdoor furniture are examples.

Exposure to sunlight, weather and physical wear affects the care a project needs. Follow the exterior guidance for the material and its conditions of use.

How is Odie’s different from polyurethane and other film-forming finishes?

Polyurethane forms a separate surface coating over the wood. That coating wears with use and eventually requires recoating or refinishing.

Applied directly to properly prepared bare wood, Odie’s Universal Oil penetrates and bonds at a molecular level, becoming integrated with the material rather than sitting on top as a separate film that can peel, flake or delaminate.

Odie’s is a complete proprietary formulation of modified natural oils and waxes—not straight tung oil, straight linseed oil or mineral oil.

Can I apply Odie’s Universal Oil over another finish?

Yes. Odie’s Universal Oil can be applied over other finishes, including polyurethane, to provide additional protection. However, the condition and durability of the existing finish affect the result.

Applying Odie’s over another finish creates a hybrid finishing system. It does not eliminate weaknesses in the underlying coating or prevent that coating from eventually failing.

For the full benefits of Odie’s penetrating finish, apply it directly to properly prepared bare material. Follow Odie’s preparation guidance when applying over an existing finish.

Does application change with the material?

Yes. Use the instructions for the surface you are treating:

Wood: Apply sparingly, work the oil into the surface, allow the instructed waiting period and buff off all excess.

Epoxy and other nonporous surfaces: Use much less product than on wood. Remove all excess.

Concrete, leather and metal: Buff off promptly rather than using the waiting period recommended for wood.

Material compatibility does not mean every surface receives identical preparation, product quantity or curing time.

Do different projects require additional coats?

The first properly applied coat provides protection. Additional applications can enhance appearance and durability and help develop the desired sheen. They are not automatically required for every project.

Follow the instructions for the material and the result you want to achieve.

Apply sparingly. Work into the surface. Buff off all excess.

Not just for the pros. Odie’s Oil is for everyone.

Examples are illustrative, not exhaustive. Preparation, application and curing requirements vary by material, existing surface condition and intended use.
