History
James Tinghitella, the creator of Odie’s finishes, knows what woodworkers and artists look for in a finish because he’s a woodworker and an artist. This guy is the real deal and brings a wealth of knowledge and 40 years of experience to Odie’s Oil.

The Foundation of Odie’s Oil
Educated at SCAD in Fine Arts and Architectural Photography, James went on to work in South Florida’s Fashion and Architectural Photography industry.
In the mid-nineties, he returned to a passion from his youth—fine woodworking, and created functional and decorative wood shutters that complied with the SBCCI hurricane code.
With James’ beautiful wooden shutters, doors, and gates throughout South Florida, he was a key player in the revitalization of Delray Beach. He created his own natural finish product (the prototype of Odie's Oil) for use on these projects. Decades later, his shutters and gates are still a part of the South Florida landscape due to their timeless design, sturdy construction, and Jame's own durable natural finish.
A Better Way
After doing research as a youth on the harmful chemicals and carcin-ogens in common wood finishing products James discovered a better way of finishing—a way without nasty solvents and toxins that still delivered durable and beautiful results. As time went by, he became inspired to change the wood finishing market and the lives of wood-workers and artisans who work with their hands every day. He knew he was not the only craftsman who would prefer a truly safe finish that also easily delivers optimum results. To his surprise, he discovered that his finished out -performed the other finishes available on the market not only for wood but for many other surfaces.

Resists Stains, Moisture and Water
The concept behind our products is “what is applied to the surface is what stays in the surface”. The surface and pores are completely saturated with the oils and waxes in the finish that is applied, so there is no room for unwanted water, moisture or stains from wine, oil, grease, juice, etc.! Our finishes contains no solvents, so almost nothing evaporates from the application during the drying process. The surface pores remain saturated with oils and waxes.
